Where does sesame grow in India? A guide to til
Sesame, commonly called til or gingelly, is a tiny seed with a wide farming footprint. Where sesame grows in India depends on warmth, seasonal moisture and local cropping practices. Its story stretches across several regions rather than belonging to one state or one sowing season.
The key detailSesame grows across many Indian regions. Warm conditions suit it, while drainage and the timing of water supply matter as much as rainfall.
Where does sesame grow in India?
ICAR's sesame variety-testing zones illustrate this breadth. Its kharif zones include Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana; Madhya Pradesh and eastern states such as Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha; Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana; and southern states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
These are agricultural testing regions, not a ranking of today's largest producers. ICAR also separates summer and rabi sesame zones, showing why a single national crop calendar would be misleading.

Why warmth and well-drained soil suit til
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University describes sesame as a tropical crop and gives an optimum temperature range of 25–35°C. Warm growing conditions help explain its suitability across many Indian farming regions.
Drainage is equally important. NC State Extension's sesame research guidance warns that the crop is sensitive to waterlogging. A field that stays saturated after rain can be unsuitable even when its temperature is favourable.

The growing season changes with location
Tamil Nadu offers a useful example: TNAU lists February–March sowing for irrigated sesame in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode, alongside June–July sowing for rainfed crops in the western zone. Local rainfall, irrigation and variety influence the choice.
Sesame's drought tolerance does not mean it needs no water. TNAU identifies flowering and pod setting among the important stages for irrigation. The timing of moisture matters, rather than simply the year's total rainfall.
