Where do almonds in India come from? A badam buying guide

ZIVASHA Editorial · · 2 min read

Almonds, often called badam, are familiar in Indian kitchens and dry-fruit gifts. Some are grown in India, while imported almonds also supply the market. Knowing that distinction helps you ask a more useful question than simply whether a hamper is packed locally.

The key detailAn Indian packing address does not establish where the almonds grew. Ask for the actual batch’s origin and pack information.

Where are almonds grown in India?

The National Horticulture Board identifies Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh as important Indian almond-growing regions. Its cultivation guide describes a temperate climate, winter chilling and loamy or clay-loam soils among the crop’s requirements. Suitable orchard conditions matter; almonds are not grown equally across every region.

Why do imported almonds appear in Indian shops?

Domestic growing regions tell only part of the story. USDA’s September 2025 India tree-nut report describes substantial almond imports, with California and Australia as major sources. It also explains that many imported in-shell almonds are shelled in India.

Growing, shelling and packing can therefore happen in different places. A local packing address or an Indian gift brand cannot, by itself, establish Indian agricultural origin. These market facts do not identify the almonds in any particular ZIVASHA batch.

What should a gift buyer confirm?

If origin or variety matters, ask for the supplied batch’s details rather than guessing from a photograph. Confirm the selected assortment, net weight and full ingredient information too. Almonds are tree nuts and can trigger allergies; check the recipient’s restrictions and the actual food labels.

ZIVASHA’s Navy Three-Jar Gift brings almonds, cashews and raisins together. Treat the presentation and the ingredient origin as separate details to confirm for your request.
