What is Khapli wheat? A simple guide to emmer

ZIVASHA Editorial · · 2 min read

Khapli wheat appears on atta packs and traditional sweet menus, but what does the name mean? Khapli refers to emmer wheat, also called Triticum dicoccum. Its identity, growing regions and gluten content are useful starting points when choosing Khapli atta or a sweet made with it.

The key detailKhapli is emmer wheat, a hulled grain with a regional farming history. It contains gluten.

How is Khapli different from other wheat?

Agharkar Research Institute distinguishes Khapli from common bread wheat and durum wheat in its breeding programme. Emmer has long, slender kernels and is a hulled wheat: its husk remains attached during harvesting and must be removed during processing. The husk should not be confused with the edible grain inside.

Where does Khapli wheat grow in India?

Indian cultivation includes northern Karnataka, southern Maharashtra, coastal Gujarat and parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. ICAR–IARI describes emmer’s adaptation to marginal and stony soils and notes that the cool, temperate conditions of the Nilgiris suit its cultivation.

There is no single climate story for every Khapli field. Variety, sowing season, irrigation and local conditions matter. A familiar regional name on a pack is therefore not proof that its grain came from a particular state.

Is Khapli wheat gluten-free?

No. The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases lists emmer among wheat types that naturally contain gluten. Descriptions such as “ancient grain” or “wholegrain” do not make it gluten-free. People with coeliac disease should not treat Khapli atta or Khapli laddus as a gluten-free alternative.

From Khapli wheat to Khapli Laddu

A grain’s name alone does not describe a finished laddu. ZIVASHA Khapli Laddu includes khapli wheat, nuts, ghee and jaggery. It contains wheat gluten, nuts and milk ingredients. Read the complete ingredient and allergen declaration before choosing a pack.

Our Khapli Laddu is offered in 250 g and 500 g containers. These are net pack weights, not guaranteed piece counts. For gifting, confirm the number of containers, required date and delivery pincode, along with storage and best-before details.

The farming regions described here explain the grain, not the origin of ZIVASHA’s particular batches. Ask our team for available batch information if regional sourcing matters to your purchase.
